Be Thankful
By Author Unknown

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire. If you did, what would there be to look forward to? Be thankful when you don’t know something, for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you opportunities  for improvement.  Be thankful for each new challenge, because it will build your strength and character. Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons. Be thankful when you’re tired and weary, because it means you’ve made a difference. It’s easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.

Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, and they can become your blessings.

Forgiven

We are sinful and God is holy. Sin can no more exist in the presence of God than darkness can exist in the presence of light. To stand before Him in self-righteousness would be to invite our destruction. The psalmist wrote, “If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” (Psalm 130:3).

In a cemetery not far from New York City is a headstone engraved with a single word: Forgiven. The message is simple and unembellished. There is no date of birth, no date of death, no epitaph. There is only a name and the solitary word forgiven. But that is the greatest word that could ever be applied to any man or woman, or that could be written on any gravestone.

The songwriter said, “There is forgiveness with You, that You may be feared” (v.4). That refrain echoes in both the Old and New Testaments. God is honored and worshiped because He alone can clear our record.

If God could not forgive us, we could only flee from Him in terror. Yet the God whose holiness threatens us is the God who through Christ redeems us.  God offers forgiveness for all our sins. We only need to ask Him.  Are you forgiven?

How blest is he whose trespass
Has freely been forgiven,
Whose sin is wholly covered
Before the sight of heaven. —Psalter

Sin invites judgment; confession ensures forgiveness

Why Does God Use Flawed People?

I always wondered why God would use people to represent Him. I wondered why He would use us for the work He wants to do in the world. Why would He assign us to be His mouthpiece, hands and feet? I mean, people have a consistent, faithful track record of unfaithfulness. We are notorious for deception, for making things all about us. Why in the world would God use us to get His work done when we are more than likely to delay all the good He wants accomplished?  I find the human life to be so inconsistent –So why use people? Why use broken cisterns? Why the continual battle with us and with ourselves to be emptied of selfishness, pride, insecurity, and wickedness in order for the work to be done?

Why not use the angels to do the work? After all, there were angels that visited the shepherds on the night Jesus was born. It was an angel that visited Daniel and Isaiah. There was an angel each that visit Elizabeth and Mary. Angels came to get Lot from Sodom and Gomorrah. And there was an angel that came to get Paul from prison. So why use people to declare the truth of The Word? Why use people at all?

I have a few ideas as to why. First off, God uses people to show those He uses of how much they need Him to get things done. Secondly, God uses people to show other people that our imperfections illuminate God’s perfection. Thirdly, God uses people to show others that, despite all the leaks in their personality and character, He still has the power and capacity to lead them into good works and to transform their lives.

His plans are so great that not even our imperfections can hinder the ultimate work He is doing in the world. Maybe God uses us to draw us closer to Him. When we see how amazing He is, we honor and revere Him more. And when we understand our place, we are filled with thanksgiving to be chosen as a tool for the work He is doing. By using people, there is never a question of whether His lessons are something we can relate to.  So I guess the real reason God uses people to minister and do the works He wants done in the world is because He’s not insecure. People always feel they need to prove something.  But God knows that if a person is really seeking Him, they will find Him. He’s not hiding, He’s made Himself plain all around us and, to top it off, He made this promise:  “For I know the plans that I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. ‘You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”  Jeremiah 29:11-13.  So despite how badly we fail to reflect the holiness of God, He knows that it is the humble heart that will be willing to see. How does it feel to know that, even though we are flawed, God still wants to use us? Have you experienced a time when God used your imperfections to glorify Himself?

Mission…South America

Tune in now for the latest report from Bill Taylor. Where I am staying is very HOT – I haven’t stopped sweating since I got here. Tuesday we went to Cuenca, Ecuador where Jefferson’s parents live….very cold there…thank God…lol! It is just lovely but treacherous….one curve after another in the mountains…sharp ones….no straight roads anywhere….three hours plus one way…..it was very taxing as these people here pass in no passing zones….they don’t slow down for curves….even Jefferson’s Dad drives this way…wow!! Going to Cuenca we got pulled over in the truck we were in because we were four in front with no seat belts….so the driver got a ticket….while he was at the back of the truck with the policeman I happened to take a picture of them from the mirror…the policeman saw me and came walking back up to the truck and told me NOT to take any more pictures…I thought I was going to jail and would have to call and tell you that I would have an extended stay here…but thank God that didn’t happen. The clouds were covering the roads to the point where we could hardly see.  I filmed some of the roads, the cars, the people on the roads, etc so you could see how it is –unbelievable!    You just about have head-ons all the time because it zig zags everywhere…road signs mean nothing…I am serious. There are tons of banana trees with huge bunches of bananas on them and coco trees, chocolate and sugar cane. Tell everyone at church that I really am missing them!!  I leave here Friday to go to Pasto Columbia where Stiven lives. (At the time of this printing..saw from FB post he made it to Columbia and there was suppose to be a music concert in which Bill would be a part of, but no word from him yet so until next week – stay tuned right here and keep him in your prayers.)

What is Success?

We judge a man by what we see and visibly make an opinion of whether or not he is successful.  God measures things differently than man…his ways are higher than ours and his end results always are successful!  Success depends upon our obedience when we submit our will.  God puts success in you when you do what He calls you to do.  God called us to be “witnesses”.  You don’t need a lot of knowledge to witness about how God has changed your life!  Everyone has a personal testimony.  It doesn’t matter what the background, where  you came from or who you are kin to – you have a testimony.  People can argue with theories, and speculation, but cannot argue with your experience with God and what he has done for you!  Our world wants to hear a witness!  Even if they reject Christ, we are successful in doing our part of sowing the seed by our witness.

The story of the Samaritan woman that met Jesus at the well in John 4 was powerful.  Verse 39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. 40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.  41 And many more believed because of his own word;  42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

The woman rushed back to the city and told the men of the city her personal testimony.  The Bible says many more believed after they heard Jesus speak.  Then the men said to the woman that they believed because they had their OWN experience with Jesus and not just because of the woman’s testimony.  This woman’s personal testimony was so effective that it moved an entire city towards Jesus Christ.  Find someone today and share how you received the Holy Ghost, how God has healed, delivered, supplied your needs – Be a Witness – that’s real success!

S t r e t c h i n g  Exercise

Jesus said you can’t put new wine into old wineskins.  Wine was kept in animal skins. Old wineskins dry up and lose their elasticity, their ability to stretch, grow, change and expand in God’s capacity. You have to expand your capacity to increase your influence for God.

Stretch Forth – action – stretching has the tendency to cause pain. When you stretch you are working muscles. So in order for us to stretch ourselves to what God asks us to become, it’s going to require some pain on our part both as a church and personally as well. Do you know how you make a muscle stronger? You have to tear down some of the cells by over-committing your muscle. It’s time to take a healthy look at the amount of spiritual commitment you are currently undertaking. Faith, Prayer and Fasting – we must crucify the flesh and sometimes that commitment is painful because the flesh does not want to participate.  We reap what we sow, your return will only be as great as your investment. When you enlarge your capacity for God by stretching your investment of faith, prayer, and fasting – God will expand your influence for what He wants to do in and thru your life as an individual and as a church!  Come on let’s do some  s t r e t c h i n g  exercises!!

Certainly we are people who love the moving of God’s Spirit, and rightly so.  A formless, lifeless, dark world needs an encounter with the glory of the Lord.  But a lesson to be learned from this passage is that one can be exposed to the moving of the Spirit and still be extremely void and empty.  For a life to be truly and permanently changed requires the introduction of creative energy through the Word of God, and preaching is the method God chose to accomplish just such a change.

There is a danger of being so proud of the dynamics of the Spirit we enjoy and of what we regularly feel in our services that we equate “goose bumps” with substantive change in our lives.  The measure of the effect of the gospel in our lives is not did we feel Him, for anything and anyone can feel Him when He moves.  The questions to be asked as we leave each service are, “Did the Word of God change anything in me?  Did His voice speak to me?  Did preaching and my response to it do a creative work in me?”

And so we must ever remain people of the Word of God, for we need preaching.  We need both the conviction of His Word to break us up sometimes, and the Spirit to change us – and this comes through preaching.

Salvation is not like an airline ticket to Brussels, Belgium.  It is not just to provide us a passage to eternity and the Holy City.  The baptism of the Holy Spirit is coupled with the great commission: “Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”  You need to share what you know.

The knowledge God gives is not given as a private keepsake to be stowed in a curio cabinet.  God intends for us to share the knowledge we have received with other people—with our children, our families, our neighbors, our countrymen, and with people from every nation in the world.

When gold was discovered in 1849 in Sutter’s Mill in Sacramento, California, the word spread and the gold rush began.  Men left their Eastern cities and farms, and journeyed over the hot and dry trails to California.  From man to man, from mouth to ear, the knowledge was shared.  As the knowledge of transportation has advanced, the information about the automobile, the steamship, the railroad, the ocean liner, the airplanes, and the rocket ships has been passed on.  How much more should the biblical discoveries and revelations be passed on to others.

May God help us fall in love with and remain in love with preaching. We must be a worshiping church, but not at the expense of preaching. It is good that we are a musical church, but not at the expense of preaching. We’d better be a friendly church, but that doesn’t replace preaching. We must be visited by the supernatural, but the moving of His Spirit and the demonstration of His might should only lead us to and confirm the truth of preaching. Such is the testimony of the apostles: “They went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen” (Mark 16:20). How can one establish the value of preaching? What is the estimate of having a man of God who will fulfill the instruction of Ezekiel: “They shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean: (Ezekiel 44:23)? What is the worth of a voice that will declare the Word of God? What is the significance of preaching? I can please God only with faith, and faith comes by hearing His Word. (See Hebrews 11:6; Romans 10:17.) Preaching convicts sinners, preaching heals the wounded, preaching brings hope, and preaching builds the church. And yet amazingly much of the Christian world is turning its back on it.
